S&P Dow Jones Indices announced on Friday a significant reshuffling of its flagship S&P 500 index, adding four new companies as part of its quarterly rebalance. Data center equipment provider Vertiv Holdings Co, photonics specialists Lumentum Holdings Inc. and Coherent, Inc., and telecommunications firm EchoStar Corporation are set to join the benchmark. The S&P 500 is widely considered the primary benchmark for large-cap stocks in the United States. Because trillions of dollars in index and exchange-traded funds track the index, membership changes typically trigger substantial trading activity as fund managers adjust their portfolios to mirror the new composition. Following the announcement, shares of the incoming companies saw notable gains in extended trading. Vertiv shares climbed nearly 6%, while EchoStar rose approximately 4%. Lumentum and Coherent also experienced upward movement, gaining 1.7% and 0.4%, respectively, after the bell. To make room for the new entrants, four companies will be removed from the index: dating service provider Match Group, Inc., healthcare firm Molina Healthcare, Inc., food processor Lamb Weston Holdings, Inc., and payroll technology developer Paycom Software, Inc.. The removals often lead to selling pressure as index-tracking funds divest from the exiting stocks. In after-hours trading, Paycom shares fell 3%, while Match Group declined 0.7% and Molina Healthcare saw a marginal slip. S&P Dow Jones Indices confirmed that these changes will become effective before the market opens on March 23. This adjustment is part of the standard quarterly rebalancing process designed to ensure the index remains representative of the evolving market landscape.
