USDA faces backlash after massive corn acreage revisions spark market turmoil

Massive USDA corn acreage revisions have sparked data reliability concerns following deep staffing cuts. The agency is now reviewing its internal procedures.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued large upward revisions to its 2025 corn planted and harvested acreage estimates for the United States USUS on February 10, 2026. This announcement triggered a decline of more than 5% in the commodity futures market and prompted the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) to open an internal review of its procedures. The January final estimates revealed that harvested acres were raised 5.2% from the June estimate, while planted acres were increased to 98.8 million from an initial 95.2 million, an unprecedented adjustment that has shaken the U.S. corn sector.
