Moolenaar Warns Against Reviving Chinese Investment
Representative John Moolenaar urged the Treasury to limit Chinese investment to protect U.S. manufacturing. The warning comes ahead of trade talks in Beijing.
A leading Republican lawmaker has issued a formal warning to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, urging the administration to resist efforts to revive market access for industrial firms from China. John Moolenaar, the chair of the House of Representatives select committee on China, argued in a letter that such a move would directly conflict with President Donald Trump's mission to revitalize manufacturing in the United States.
The communication surfaces as the administration prepares for high-stakes trade negotiations in Beijing later this month. While Chinese foreign direct investment in the American market has dropped significantly amid de-risking efforts, recent reports indicate that both nations may be exploring pathways to restore reciprocal investment. Moolenaar cautioned that Chinese companies often leverage state support to operate at a loss, which allows them to displace domestic competitors.
