Belgium and Rwanda Resume Diplomatic Ties
Belgium and Rwanda have restored diplomatic relations eighteen months after cutting ties over the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Both nations plan to reopen their embassies soon following months of constructive talks facilitated by Qatar.
Belgium and Rwanda restored diplomatic ties on Tuesday, 18 months after cutting relations over the conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's eastern region. The renewed ties follow a series of meetings facilitated by Qatar in recent months. Both nations plan to reopen their respective embassies following the diplomatic breakthrough.
Foreign ministers Maxime Prevot and Olivier Nduhungirehe announced the agreement on social media from New York, where officials are gathered for the United Nations General Assembly. The two countries previously expelled each other's diplomats in March 2025 as tensions mounted over the advance of AFC/M23 rebels in eastern Congos North and South Kivu provinces.
