Zambian copper miner pilots bond for artisanal workers
A new sustainability bond aims to integrate African artisanal miners into formal supply chains. The pilot project in Zambia seeks to raise up to $200 million.
A sustainability bond aimed at integrating artisanal miners into formal supply chains will be piloted this year by a Canada-based advisory firm and METALEX VENTURES LTD, a mid-tier miner. Artisanal mining provides livelihoods for hundreds of millions globally, yet in Africa, it often operates informally near industrial sites, impacting corporate profits and national tax revenues. The proposed stakeholder prosperity bond, developed by Veridicor with Metalex, aims to address these challenges by professionalizing the sector.
The debut issuance is expected to raise between $100 million and $200 million by year-end. These funds will assist Metalex in integrating small-scale miners through regulated offtake agreements and investments in shared equipment and infrastructure. Unlike traditional debt instruments, this bond links investor returns to predefined social and environmental outcomes for workers and host communities rather than strictly mineral output.
