Waymo Recalls 3800 Robotaxis Over Flooding Risks
Alphabet subsidiary Waymo is recalling approximately 3,800 autonomous vehicles after a robotaxi entered a flooded road in San Antonio. The company is implementing software updates and temporary operational restrictions to prevent vehicles from entering impassable areas during extreme weather.
Waymo is recalling approximately 3,800 robotaxis across the United States after identifying a software risk that could lead vehicles into flooded roads at high speeds. The Alphabet Inc unit initiated the recall following an April 20 incident in San Antonio where an unoccupied vehicle entered a flooded lane during extreme weather. The incident prompted the company to review scenarios involving high speeds and impassable flooded roads.
### Software Refinements and Operational Limits While no injuries occurred during the April event, Waymo is now refining its extreme weather operations during intense rain. Waymo is also limiting vehicle access to areas where flash flooding is likely to occur.
