US Threatens Cuts to South Sudan Aid Over Humanitarian Fees
Washington warns Juba to halt illicit fees or face major aid reductions.
The United States
US has issued a stark warning to South Sudan
SS, threatening to reduce foreign assistance unless Juba halts what Washington describes as illicit fees on humanitarian shipments. The ultimatum, delivered Thursday in an unusually pointed statement titled "Time to Stop Taking Advantage of the United States," marks an escalation in tensions between the world's largest humanitarian donor and a government accused of exploiting aid flows.
The U.S. Bureau of African Affairs accused South Sudan's government of imposing "exorbitant fees" on humanitarian shipments and obstructing U.N. peacekeeping operations. "These actions constitute egregious violations of South Sudan's international obligations," the statement declared. "We call on the transitional government to halt these actions immediately. If it does not, the United States will initiate a comprehensive review of our foreign assistance in South Sudan with the likelihood of making significant reductions."
