The S&P 500 gained 10.29 points, or 0.15%, to reach 6,954.76 at 11:42 a.m. ET, following a week that saw the index and the Dow Jones Industrial Average punch out fresh record closes on Monday, January 13. By mid-day Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Averagerose 5.48 points, or 0.01%, to 49,447.92, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 40.78 points, or 0.17%, to 23,570.80. Breadth on the exchanges was negative as declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 1.44-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and by a 1.17-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq Composite.
Sector performance was marked by a rotation away from heavyweight financials toward defensive areas. The Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund was headed for its worst week since October, pressured by a proposed one-year cap on credit card interest rates at 10% that weighed on lenders. Conversely, the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund , the Real Estate Select Sector SPDR Fund , and the Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund were on top of the leaderboard for weekly gains. Within the technology sector, Micron Technology gained 5.6% and Seagate Technology gained 2.2% on Friday, continuing rallies built on artificial intelligence demand. Small-cap stocks also showed strength, with the S&P 600 small-cap index and the Russell 2000 index both set to gain about 2% for the week.
