NHTSA investigates Avride self-driving vehicle crashes
United States regulators are investigating 16 crashes involving Avride autonomous vehicles. The probe evaluates safety risks and technical performance in Texas.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating autonomous vehicle startup Avride following 16 crashes in Texas. Avride operates some of its vehicles on the UBER TECHNOLOGIES INC platform, and the vehicles demonstrated "excessive assertiveness" and technical failures including improper lane changes and failure to avoid obstacles. The investigation assesses whether these incidents constitute traffic safety violations and pose risks to passengers and other road users.
### Federal Scrutiny of Autonomous Performance The NHTSA said Avride vehicles executed lane changes into other cars and failed to avoid stationary objects. Preliminary reviews of crash footage showed vehicles failing to slow for traffic or striking obstacles partially blocking lanes. These incidents resulted in property damage and one reported minor injury.
