US Refiners Profit from Biofuels Amid New Mandates
Major US refiners including Valero and HF Sinclair are reporting significant profits from renewable fuels following record EPA blending mandates and rising diesel prices. While surging credit values and increased demand have reversed previous losses, analysts warn that high feedstock costs and regional conflicts may impact future production capacity.
United States oil refiners are generating profits from renewable fuels following record government blending mandates and a 46% surge in diesel prices driven by the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. The shift follows the Environmental Protection Agency requirement in late March to increase biodiesel and renewable diesel use by 60%, along with a long-standing requirement to mix about 15 billion gallons of ethanol into gasoline each year. For investors, this turnaround transforms a long-standing regulatory burden into a source of refining strength.
