A cross-party group of lawmakers in the United States has introduced a new legislative proposal to impose further restrictions on exports of computer chipmaking equipment to China. The draft MATCH Act, announced late Thursday, is aimed at protecting the American lead in artificial intelligence by preventing Chinese companies from obtaining manufacturing tools they cannot produce themselves and ensuring that companies based in allied nations face the same restrictions as their U.S. rivals.

Lawmakers stated that their focus is on restricting technologies where China relies heavily on imports, such as immersion deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography needed to create chip circuitry. This market segment is currently dominated by the Netherlands-based ASML HOLDING NV, which competes with its smaller rival from Japan, NIKON CORP.
