US Sanctions Armed Group Commanders in Eastern Congo

The U.S. sanctioned M23 and FDLR commanders to curb violence in eastern Congo. Treasury officials stated the move aims to support peace and resolve the crisis.

The United States imposed sanctions on two rebel commanders on Tuesday to curb escalating violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This action targets leaders of the M23 and FDLR groups following the collapse of a Washington-brokered peace effort. Stabilizing the mineral-rich region is essential for the White House to secure planned Western investment.

### Sanctions Target Intelligence Leaders The U.S. Treasury Department designated M23 intelligence chief John Imani Nzenze and FDLR special operations leader Gustave Kubwayo. These groups remain locked in conflict in eastern DRC, where the U.N. alleges Rwanda provides backing to M23 rebels. Rwanda continues to deny these allegations while fighting the FDLR, a Hutu militia linked to the 1994 genocide.
