US crude premiums reach record highs amid supply competition
US crude premiums hit record highs as Asian and European refiners compete for supply. The price surge is increasing costs and pressuring global refining margins.
Spot premiums for West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude have surged to record levels as refiners in Asia and Europe compete for available supply. This intensified demand follows significant disruptions to Middle Eastern oil flows caused by the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Traditionally the primary importer of crude from the United States, Europe now faces aggressive bidding from Asian buyers seeking alternatives to oil typically transported through the Strait of Hormuz.
The sharp increase in crude prices is straining the financial health of refiners across both continents. Analysts note that rising costs are widening losses, particularly for state-owned enterprises tasked by governments to maintain fuel production for national security.
