US Consumer Sentiment Improves in January but Remains Well Below Previous Year Levels
The University of Michigan reported that US consumer sentiment rose to 56.4 in January. While improving from December, it remains 20 percent below last year.
The University of Michigan released its final Consumer Sentiment Index reading for January 2026 today, revealing an upward revision to 56.4. This figure represents an increase from the preliminary estimate of 54.0 and surpasses the December 2025 reading of 52.9. Economists polled by Reuters had previously forecast that the index would remain unrevised from its preliminary mid-month estimate. Despite the monthly gain, national sentiment in the US
USremains more than 20 percent below the levels recorded one year ago in January 2025.
