Unexpected Drop in US Jobless Claims Masks Stagnant Labor Market Conditions
Jobless claims fell to 198,000 but economists warn this reflects seasonal quirks. Hiring is sluggish as trade and immigration policies impact the US market.
Initial claims for state unemployment benefits in the
US dropped by 9,000 to a seasonally adjusted 198,000 for the week ended January 10, according to data released by the U.S. Labor Department on Thursday, January 15. This figure fell significantly below the 215,000 claims that economists polled by Reuters had forecast for the latest week. Despite the surprise drop, analysts caution that the decline likely reflects continuing challenges in adjusting the data for seasonal fluctuations typically seen around the year-end holiday season and the start of a new year rather than a material improvement in economic conditions.
