Ukraine projects defense exports could hit several billion dollars after authorizing first wartime sales
Ukraine expects defense exports to reach several billion dollars this year after authorizing wartime sales. Officials may tax these deals to fund the military.
The State commission handling wartime export licences has approved the majority of 40 wartime export licence applications today, marking the first time Ukraine
UA has authorised foreign sales of military goods and services since the country halted weapons exports after the February 2022 invasion by Russia
RU. This decision, finalized on February 20, 2026, reverses the post-invasion halt and is designed to activate the country's expanding defence industry for foreign customers.
The approvals could open the possibility of several billion dollars in defence exports this year, providing a significant boost to the Ukrainian defence sector (manufacturers and developers). In response to the potential for high-volume sales, there is currently consideration of an export tax to fund Ukraine's military needs. The State commission handling wartime export licences is working alongside Kyiv's National Security and Defence Council to ensure that all export decisions are prioritised against ongoing frontline requirements.
