UK Stocks Rise Ahead of US Inflation Data and Peace Talks
UK stocks rose on Friday ahead of U.S. inflation data and peace talks. AO World gained on profit news while Wizz Air rose on hopes of a deal in Ukraine.
Equity markets in the United Kingdom trended higher on Friday, positioning the major indices for a positive weekly finish. The blue-chip FTSE 100 index gained 0.3% by midday, marking its third consecutive week of growth, while the midcap FTSE 250 index rose by 1%, heading toward its second straight weekly gain. Investor sentiment was bolstered by a mix of corporate earnings and anticipation of critical economic data from the United States.

Global attention is centered on upcoming peace negotiations between officials from the United States and Iran, scheduled to take place in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, this Saturday. The diplomatic push comes as the Strait of Hormuz remains closed and military tensions persist between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, with both sides accusing the other of violating ceasefire terms.
Earlier in the week, stock prices found relief as both Brent Crude Oil and West Texas Oil prices softened following the announcement of a two-week ceasefire in the Middle East. Despite this, the restricted flow of oil from the Gulf has kept futures prices trading near the $100 per barrel level. Investors are also awaiting U.S. consumer price data, which is expected to show the largest monthly increase in nearly four years.
In the retail sector, AO WORLD PLC shares climbed 6.9% after the electronics firm projected annual profits at the top end of its previous estimates, citing market share gains. In contrast, B&M EUROPEAN VALUE RETAIL SA saw its shares fall 3.6% following the announcement that interim CFO Helen Cowing would leave the company after less than five months.
Aviation stocks also saw significant movement as WIZZ AIR HOLDINGS PLC jumped 9.7%. The surge followed reports that the top negotiator for Ukraine identified progress in discussions regarding a potential peace agreement with Russia.
