The United Kingdom competition regulator has moved to curb proposed water bill increases, capping the average rise at 2.2% for several major utility firms. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced on Tuesday that an independent panel rejected the majority of the funding requests submitted by five water companies, significantly reducing the financial impact on households compared to the original requests.

Under the final determination, the CMA panel granted the companies a combined £463 million ($623.11 million) in additional revenue. This figure represents a sharp reduction from the £2.7 billion the utilities had initially sought, effectively cutting their funding requests by 83%. This latest ruling also scales back a preliminary decision from October, which would have allowed £556 million in extra revenue and a 3% increase in customer bills.

The dispute involved five major providers: Anglian Water, Northumbrian Water, South East Water, Southern Water, and Wessex Water. These companies had appealed a previous decision by the industry regulator, Ofwat, which sought to limit the ability of utilities to raise bills by more than 36% over the five-year period ending in 2030. Kirstin Baker, the chair of the independent group at the CMA, emphasized the need for a balanced approach to utility pricing and environmental investment.

We've rejected most of the bill increases water companies asked for but allowed limited extra funding where that's genuinely needed, balancing concerns about affordability with the need to secure our water supplies and cut pollution.
