UK defers ban on fuel refined from Russian crude
The British government has delayed a planned ban on imports of diesel and jet fuel refined from Russian crude in third countries to ensure energy security during Middle East supply disruptions. Prime Minister Keir Starmer defended the move as a necessary phase-in measure despite criticism from lawmakers.
The United Kingdom deferred a ban on diesel and jet fuel refined from Russia crude in third countries on Wednesday. The move delays a restriction first announced in October to address energy supply risks linked to the Iran war. Investors are monitoring the decision as it allows cheaper refined products to flow into British markets despite ongoing geopolitical sanctions.
### Balancing Energy Security and Sanctions Trade department minister Chris Bryant said the measures were taken due to the situation in the Middle East. He intended to implement the ban as soon as possible once supply risks subsided. The carve-out allows imports of fuel refined in India and Turkey that may originate from Russian oil.
