The United States embassy is set to sponsor a high-stakes investment event in Brazil this Wednesday, aiming to bridge the gap between American investors and local firms producing critical minerals. The gathering in Sao Paulo arrives at a delicate moment for bilateral relations, as diplomatic tensions threaten to complicate efforts to secure Western Hemisphere supply chains for materials essential to modern technology and energy transition. Washington has intensified its search for reliable access to critical mineral reserves, specifically rare earths, to counter the market dominance currently held by China. Major industry players, including Citigroup Inc. and Anglo American plc, are expected to participate in the discussions alongside representatives from several Brazilian state governments. However, the diplomatic backdrop remains fraught. Officials from the federal government in Brasilia recently withdrew from the Brazil–U.S. Forum on Critical Minerals. This move followed a series of incidents that soured relations, including a request by a U.S. official to visit former President Jair Bolsonaro, which Brazilian authorities viewed as an attempt to meddle in internal matters. Additional friction stems from the decision by U.S. representatives to sign a specific critical minerals agreement with Goias state Governor Ronaldo Caiado, a political opponent of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Some federal officials characterized the move as an attempt to bypass the federal government. Despite these hurdles, the U.S. remains optimistic about long-term cooperation and a shared interest in partnering to develop Brazils processing capacity. Developing domestic processing capabilities is a top priority for the administration of President Lula, as the country seeks to move up the value chain rather than simply exporting raw ores. U.S. officials have identified more than 50 mining projects across the country that could attract billions of dollars in investment and help diversify the global supply of critical minerals. More than 100 companies are expected to attend the event at the American Chamber of Commerce in Sao Paulo, where local miners will pitch their projects to international investors.
