Retailers and consumers in the capital city of Turkmenistan are facing a significant surge in the prices of essential goods as cross-border trade with Iran is hampered by regional conflict. The disruption follows military strikes by Israel and the United States on Iranian territory, which have restricted the flow of imports into the desert nation of 7 million people. While the economy of Turkmenistan is primarily driven by natural gas exports to China, the country relies heavily on its southern neighbor for consumer staples, including food and construction materials.

Local market reports from Ashgabat indicate that the cost of staples such as potatoes and cucumbers has doubled at local bazaars. The capital is situated just 30 kilometers from the border, making it highly vulnerable to supply chain interruptions. Aman, a dealer in construction materials, told Reuters that stocks are rapidly depleting and new shipments are not arriving, leading to a 50% to 70% markup on remaining Iranian goods.
