TSX Rises on Mining and Tech Gains Amid Peace Hopes
The TSX rose 0.3 percent today as mining and tech shares gained on Middle East peace hopes. Materials and technology led the market while energy stocks fell.
The Canada stock market moved higher on Tuesday as the S&P/TSX Composite Index climbed 0.3% to reach 33,982.05 points. This growth was primarily fueled by gains in the technology and materials sectors, as investors found optimism in the potential for renewed diplomatic efforts in the Middle East. Reports suggested that negotiating teams from the United States and Iran could return to Islamabad, Pakistan, to resume discussions aimed at ending regional conflict. Strength in the materials sector was bolstered by a 1.2% rise in Gold and a 4.4% jump in Silver. These gains came as a weaker dollar made precious metals more affordable for international investors. Consequently, mining firms like AYA GOLD & SILVER INC saw their valuations increase by 5.6%. In the technology sector, shares advanced 2.5%, mirroring the positive trend seen on Wall Street. The financial sector also saw a 0.5% increase, despite investors processing mixed quarterly results from major U.S. banks including JPMORGAN CHASE & CO, CITIGROUP INC, and WELLS FARGO & CO. Conversely, the energy sector fell 2.1% as oil prices dropped on easing supply concerns. Among individual stocks, MDA SPACE LTD shares surged 8.2%, marking their highest point since August 2025. These market movements come shortly after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney secured a parliamentary majority, a victory he stated would assist in managing trade relations with the U.S. administration.
