Futures tracking the resource-heavy stock index in Canada edged higher on Wednesday morning as global markets rallied on signals from the United States regarding a potential de-escalation of conflict in the Middle East. June futures on the S&P/TSX Composite Index rose 0.4% as of 5:54 a.m. ET, although gains were tempered by a decline in energy prices.

President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated on Tuesday that the standoff with Iran may be nearing a conclusion. The administration hinted at possible direct engagement with Iranian leaders and a reduction in hostilities, even without a formal agreement in place. The White House is expected to provide a significant update on the situation during a national address scheduled for Wednesday evening.

The prospect of a swift resolution impacted commodity markets, with West Texas Oil prices falling approximately 3% after a sharp rally since the conflict began. In contrast, Gold extended its gains to reach a near two-week high as the dollar softened following the de-escalation signals. These shifts in commodity prices continue to influence the performance of the USD/CAD and the broader Canadian energy sector.

Concerns regarding a potential inflation shock remain, prompting central banks to reassess their monetary policies. Markets are currently pricing in nearly two interest rate hikes by the end of the year, a development that the Bank of Canada is monitoring closely. The TSX index is coming off a 4.6% decline in March, its steepest monthly fall since May 2023, though it concluded the first quarter with a 3.3% gain, marking its seventh consecutive quarterly increase.

In a separate diplomatic move, Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne is set to travel to China this week. The visit aims to strengthen strategic and economic ties between the two nations as global trade dynamics continue to evolve.
