Trump orders 100 percent drug tariffs and metals changes
President Trump ordered 100% tariffs on branded drugs to lower prices and move production to the U.S. He also halved duties on many metal derivatives today.
One year after the "Liberation Day" trade announcements, President Donald Trump has issued new executive orders targeting branded pharmaceutical imports and restructuring duties on metals. The move, announced on Thursday in the United States, comes as the administration attempts to recover from a Supreme Court ruling that invalidated previous broad global tariffs.
Under the new proclamation, foreign manufacturers of patented drugs must commit to reducing prescription prices and relocating production to American soil to avoid a 100% tariff. Companies that move only a portion of their manufacturing will face a 20% duty. These measures follow a national security investigation into the pharmaceutical supply chain. Smaller producers will have 180 days to comply, while larger firms are given a 120-day window.
