Trump Administration Increases Biofuel Blending Mandates
The EPA set 2026 biofuel obligations at 26.81 billion RINs while fuel prices rise due to the Iran war. Refiners warn the move will further increase costs.
The administration of President Donald Trump has issued a directive requiring fuel refiners in the United States to increase the volume of biofuels blended into the nation's gasoline and diesel supplies for 2026 and 2027. This regulatory shift has drawn sharp criticism from the oil industry, which warns that the new mandates will exacerbate rising fuel costs already impacted by the ongoing conflict in Iran.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized biofuel obligations for 2026 at 26.81 billion Renewable Identification Numbers (RINs) and for 2027 at 27.02 billion RINs. These requirements represent a significant increase from earlier proposals of 24.02 billion and 24.46 billion RINs, respectively. The updated figures incorporate 70% of approximately 2 billion gallons that were previously waived for small refiners between 2023 and 2025.
