The Toronto Stock Exchange faced a sharp downturn on Thursday as escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East rattled global markets. The S&P/TSX composite index fell 1.42% to end the session at 31,854.98, its lowest point since February. This decline brings the index’s total losses to over 7% since the onset of the conflict between Israel and Iran. Investors reacted to attacks on regional energy infrastructure, which have intensified concerns regarding persistent inflation. The materials sector was the primary driver of the market's decline, dropping more than 5% to hit a new low for the year. Gold mining stocks were hit particularly hard, falling 6% as a group, with some smaller mining entities seeing double-digit percentage losses. This sell-off coincided with a 3.2% drop in spot gold prices, which settled at $4,657 per ounce after reaching record highs earlier in the year. > "Today ... its all gold. The gold is crushed and tumbled," said Barry Schwartz, chief investment officer at Baskin Wealth Management. In contrast to the broader market, energy stocks provided a significant boost, with the sector index rising 3.37%. Brent crude futures settled at $108.65 per barrel, up 1.2%, after a volatile session where prices briefly surged past $119. In the United States, crude prices saw a moderate easing later in the day, which helped the TSX recover some of its earlier losses. As Canada remains a major net exporter of oil, the rise in energy prices offered a degree of support to domestic producers and government revenues. > "Those things (oil and mining) are notoriously very, very speculative and could move quickly," Schwartz said, adding if the Iran conflict does not last long, that could be a good buying opportunity for investors outside of the commodity sector. The broader market malaise extended into other key sectors as risk appetite diminished. The financial, industrial, and real estate sectors all lost more than one percent during Thursday's trading. Royal Bank of Canada saw its shares decrease by 1.21%, while TD Bank shed 0.67%, reflecting the widespread pressure on the Canadian market as the geopolitical situation remains unresolved.
