Sweden to Hand Over Seized Cargo Ship Caffa to Ukraine
A Swedish court ruled the seized ship Caffa may be sent to Ukraine, as it is suspected of hauling grain from occupied areas. Owners have three weeks to appeal.
A court in Sweden ruled that a seized cargo vessel suspected of transporting stolen grain may be handed over to Ukraine. The 96-meter ship, the Caffa, was intercepted in the Baltic Sea in March following allegations of maritime law violations and unseaworthiness. The ruling follows a request from Ukrainian authorities investigating the appropriation of property in territory occupied by Russia.
### Legal Basis for Asset Transfer The district court determined that the seizure of the Caffa was legally founded, rejecting a challenge from the owner, Caffa Shipping Limited. Ukrainian authorities requested the vessel as part of an investigation into the illegal appropriation of property. Public prosecutor Hakan Larsson confirmed the ruling clears the way for the transfer of the ship and related evidence.
