Central banks managing more than $9.5 trillion in global reserves have identified geopolitical tensions as the preeminent risk to the world economy, according to a new industry survey. The study, conducted by Central Banking Publications between January and March, reveals a dramatic shift in the priorities of nearly 100 institutions as global instability mounts.

Almost 70% of the surveyed banks now rank geopolitics as their primary concern, a significant increase from the 35% recorded in 2024. This surge in anxiety has displaced trade protectionism as the leading threat. The heightened concern follows a period of intense international friction, including military actions in Iran and a diplomatic dispute between the United States and Denmark regarding Greenland.
