A prolonged labour strike at the Mantoverde copper and gold mine in northern Chile
CLhas entered a critical phase as negotiations between management and workers remain deadlocked. The strike, which began on January 2 following the collapse of labour contract negotiations, involves a union representing 645 workers. This disruption occurs at a time when Copper Futures are trading at record highs and global commodity markets are increasingly sensitive to any signs of tightening supply.
The operation, which is 70% owned by Capstone Copper Corp and 30% by Mitsubishi Materials Corporation , accounts for approximately 0.4% of total global copper output. The mine was forecast to produce between 29,000 and 32,000 metric tons of copper cathode in 2025. Given the strong expected future demand for the metal, the ongoing halt in production has drawn significant attention from international market participants and industrial sectors reliant on stable copper exports.
