Spanish wind group warns EU tax could hurt investment
Spain's wind industry warns a proposed EU windfall tax could curb renewable investment. Five nations seek the tax to fund relief amid high energy prices.
The wind industry association in Spain, known as AEE, has cautioned that a proposed windfall tax on energy profits could jeopardize future investments in renewable infrastructure. This warning comes as the European Union intensifies its efforts to transition away from fossil fuels and enhance energy security across the continent.
The industry's concerns were sparked by a joint proposal from five member states seeking to address the financial impact of soaring energy costs. Finance ministers from Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Austria recently submitted a formal request to the European Commission. Their letter advocates for a bloc-wide tax on excess profits generated during the recent energy price volatility, which was largely driven by the conflict involving Iran.
