Spanish rail unions cancel nationwide strike after safety deal
Major unions cancelled the walkout today following state promises to improve infrastructure and staffing. Some smaller groups continue striking through Wednesday.
Spain’s primary rail unions have officially called off a planned three-day nationwide strike that was scheduled to begin today, February 9, 2026. The move comes after a series of intense negotiations with government and rail authorities resulted in a commitment to enhance safety protocols across the national network. The suspension of the industrial action effectively halts what would have been an imminent nationwide transport stoppage, providing immediate relief to travelers and logistical operations throughout Spain

The agreement to cancel the strike was reached following pledges from the Spain Transport Ministry, the infrastructure management entity Adif, and the state-owned operator Renfe. These organizations have agreed to boost overall investment in the rail system and reinforce staffing levels as part of a broader package of safety measures. While the unions have accepted these commitments as a basis to return to work, the agreement notably did not specify concrete measures or provide a detailed timeline for the implementation of the promised improvements.
