Energy ministers from Spain and Ireland are scheduled to sign a preliminary agreement this Thursday to evaluate the feasibility of a direct undersea electricity cable connecting the two nations. This initiative aligns with broader European efforts to enhance energy security and accelerate decarbonization through the integration of renewable energy sources.

For the Spanish government, the project represents a critical step toward overcoming its long-standing isolation from the European power grid. Under current European Union targets, member states are expected to possess interconnection capacity equivalent to at least 15% of their electricity production by 2030. Currently, Spain's interconnection capacity remains below 3%, a deficit that has caused persistent concern in Madrid, particularly following a major blackout last year that highlighted the need for greater grid resilience.
