Seoul invests $166 million in AI chip firm Rebellions
Seoul approved a $166 million investment in AI chip startup Rebellions. The funding supports the K-Nvidia project to build a globally competitive chip maker.
The industry ministry of South Korea announced on Tuesday that the Financial Services Commission's advisory board has approved a 250 billion won ($166 million) investment in Rebellions, a domestic artificial intelligence chip startup. This move is a core component of a government-led strategy to foster a homegrown semiconductor powerhouse capable of competing on the global stage.

Established in 2020, Rebellions focuses on the design of neural processing units (NPUs) specifically optimized for AI computations. The capital injection was finalized during a fund management committee meeting for the state-led National Growth Fund, marking the first direct investment under the country's K-Nvidia initiative. This project is jointly managed by the Financial Services Commission and the Ministry of Science and ICT.
The primary objective of the K-Nvidia project is to cultivate a globally competitive AI chip firm within a market currently dominated by major players from the United States, such as NVIDIA Corporation. By supporting the mass production of NPU chips and the development of next-generation semiconductors, Seoul aims to secure its position within the global AI supply chain and reduce reliance on foreign technology.
The funding will support Rebellions mass production of NPU chips and the development of next-generation AI semiconductors, the industry ministry said in a statement.
As the global demand for high-performance computing hardware continues to surge, this strategic investment highlights the determination of the South Korean government to establish a robust domestic ecosystem for advanced strategic industries and strengthen its standing in the international technology sector.
