South African Rand Weakens Against Dollar on Thursday
The rand fell 1% against the dollar on Thursday due to high oil prices and risk aversion. While gold gains offered support, the currency remains under pressure.
The rand in South Africa weakened in early trade on Thursday, slipping below the 16.40 mark against the United States dollar. This decline was driven by a combination of high energy costs and a general shift toward risk aversion, which capped the currency's recovery. At 08:14 GMT, the rand was trading at 16.4975 per dollar, down approximately 1% from its previous close.
The USD/ZAR exchange rate has moved significantly away from the 16.00 level this week, with the rand losing roughly 4% of its value since Monday. While elevated gold prices have provided some support due to safe-haven demand, the impact is being offset by high prices for Brent Crude Oil, which continue to strain the country's terms of trade.
