South African Rand Gains After GDP Beats Expectations
The South African rand strengthened 0.6 percent to 16.4325 against the dollar after first-quarter GDP grew by 0.5 percent. While the data exceeded analyst forecasts, economists warned that future reports will likely reflect the impact of the Middle East conflict and rising energy costs.
South Africa's GDP grew 0.5% in the first quarter of 2026, pushing the rand up 0.6% against the United States dollar. The expansion beat the 0.3% growth forecast by Reuters economists and follows a 0.4% increase in the final quarter of 2025. While the data shows resilience, the figures predate energy price shocks caused by the conflict in Iran.
USD/ZAR traded at 16.4325 during the afternoon, reflecting a gain for the local currency. Statistics South Africa data showed the economy grew 1.8% year-on-year on a seasonally adjusted basis.
