Rand Drops as US-Iran Tensions Push Oil Above $100
The rand fell 0.9% on Monday after US-Iran peace talks collapsed. Rising oil prices above $100 and a new naval blockade weighed on the currency.
The South Africa rand declined on Monday as geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran intensified following the collapse of weekend peace talks in Islamabad. The breakdown in diplomacy led to Brent Crude Oil prices surging back above $100 per barrel, a move that has dampened global risk appetite and pressured emerging market assets.
At 12:28 GMT, the USD/ZAR currency pair was trading at 16.58, representing a 0.9% weakening of the rand from its previous close. The market volatility follows a U.S. announcement regarding a naval blockade on all shipping entering or leaving Iranian ports in the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, which is set to take effect this week.
