The Richards Bay Coal Terminal in South Africa
ZAexported 57.66 million metric tons of Coal in 2025, marking an 11 percent increase from the previous year. This volume represents the highest export level in four years and reflects a partial recovery in the nation's bulk transport infrastructure. The growth was primarily driven by improved performance on the freight rail lines connecting mines to the port since the second half of 2024.
Logistics data shows that 7,157 trains were offloaded at the terminal throughout 2025, a significant increase from the 6,342 trains handled in 2024. This improvement allowed for an average of 20 daily train offloads compared to just 17 per day in the prior year. Despite these gains, the 2025 export figures remain 25 percent below the 2017 peak of 76 million tons, highlighting the continued gap between current output and historical highs.
