South Africa adds EV battery minerals to incentive plan
The South African government proposes adding lithium and cobalt to its automotive incentive scheme to boost local electric vehicle production. The plan aims to deepen regional supply chains and support the 2035 master plan for the industry.
South Africa is expanding its automotive incentive program to include electric vehicle battery minerals to boost local production and support regional supply chains. This policy review addresses the global shift toward electric mobility and rising competition from low-cost imports from China and India. The move aims to secure the domestic industry’s role in the global transition by aligning local manufacturing with tightening international emissions rules.
### Expanding the Critical Minerals List The International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) announced in a notice released late evening Monday that it intends to add rare earths, lithium, graphite, cobalt, iron, and Copper to the incentive framework. Existing rules already cover materials like aluminium, steel, and Platinum. Under the proposal, half of the value of these newly added minerals would count as local value added.
