Six Swiss Banks Launch Swiss Franc Stablecoin Sandbox
Six Swiss banks including UBS are testing a Swiss franc stablecoin in a new digital sandbox. The project aims to boost the national digital money ecosystem.
A group of six major financial institutions in Switzerland has entered a partnership to investigate the potential uses of a Swiss franc stablecoin. UBS GROUP AG-REG confirmed on Wednesday that the banks are collaborating with Swiss Stablecoin AG to launch a "sandbox" environment designed to test blockchain connectivity with the national currency.
The initiative includes PostFinance, Sygnum, Raiffeisen, Zürcher Kantonalbank (ZKB), and Banque Cantonale Vaudoise (BCV). This secure digital live environment is expected to begin operations in 2026, with the primary goal of strengthening the domestic digital money ecosystem. While the current group consists of six members, the project remains open to other interested banks.

The move comes as the financial sector seeks to modernize its infrastructure. According to the participating banks, the lack of a regulated, widely-used stablecoin pegged to the Swiss franc represents a gap in the current market. By conducting these tests, the group aims to establish a framework for future digital transactions and enhance the overall financial landscape.

There is currently no regulated Swiss franc stablecoin with broad application in Switzerland.
