Senator Elizabeth Warren of the United States has formally requested details from Amazon.com, Inc. regarding its algorithmic pricing and contracting practices. In a letter addressed to CEO Andy Jassy, the Senator raised concerns that the company's procurement platform, Amazon Business, may be subjecting schools and local government agencies to inflated costs through dynamic pricing models. The inquiry follows a report from the advocacy group Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR), which suggested that certain public institutions paid significantly more for basic office supplies than others in nearby jurisdictions. According to the ILSR findings, one city was charged three times as much for a pack of Sharpie markers compared to a neighboring school district. Warren noted that while fixed pricing is the industry standard for procurement, Amazon Business appears to utilize algorithm-driven dynamic pricing. This method forces public entities to navigate ever-changing costs for essential goods. > "Instead of offering fixed prices for all buyers, which are typical in the procurement space, Amazon Business subjects buyers to algorithm-driven dynamic pricing that forces school districts and local governments to pay ever-changing, often inflated costs for essential goods," Sen. Warren said in the letter. The Senator's letter included a series of twelve questions focused on how the e-commerce giant determines prices for local governments and the extent to which personal consumer data is used to set those rates. This scrutiny aligns with ongoing concerns from the Federal Trade Commission and states such as California and New York regarding the collection of personal data for pricing purposes. This is not the first time the Massachusetts Senator has challenged the company's pricing models. In February, Warren sent a separate inquiry on behalf of the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs regarding tariff-induced price increases and whether the company intended to pass savings back to consumers following a Supreme Court ruling on the matter.
