S&P Downgrades Botswana Rating on Diamond Market Weakness
S&P cut Botswana's rating to BBB- today due to diamond market weakness. The agency projects fiscal deficits through 2029 as synthetic diamonds hurt exports.
S&P Global Ratings has downgraded the long-term foreign and local currency sovereign credit ratings of Botswana to BBB- from BBB, citing a structural downturn in the global diamond market. The ratings agency also lowered the nation's short-term ratings to A-3 and maintained a negative outlook, highlighting concerns that minerals-dependent revenue will remain under pressure for longer than previously anticipated.
The downgrade underscores the mounting pressure on the world's second-largest producer of natural rough diamonds. The sector, which historically generates approximately 70% of the country's exports and one-third of its government revenue, is currently grappling with the rise of synthetic alternatives and a slowdown in major consumer markets.
