RWE Targets US Gas Power with $20 Billion Investment Plan
RWE will invest $20 billion in the US by 2031 to meet rising data center demand. The plan targets 22 GW of capacity through new gas-fired power plants.
RWE AG, the largest electricity generator in Germany, has unveiled plans for a major expansion in the United States to capitalize on rising energy needs from the technology sector. The company intends to invest 17 billion euros ($20 billion) through 2031, focusing specifically on the construction of new gas-fired power plants to support the power-hungry data center industry. This investment represents nearly half of the group's total projected spending for the period. RWE currently maintains a significant presence in the American market with 13 gigawatts (GW) of installed capacity across wind, solar, and battery storage technologies. The new strategy aims to increase this total capacity to 22 GW by 2031, integrating flexible gas generation alongside its existing renewable portfolio to meet the evolving demands of the U.S. power grid.
