Russia recruits Indian workers to fill labor gaps caused by war

Moscow is hiring Indian workers to address a labor shortage worsened by the war. These migrants fill roles in factories as traditional labor sources decline.

Russia RURU is intensifying its efforts to recruit workers from India ININ and is expanding work-permit quotas to fill a massive labor gap. Russian officials report an immediate shortfall of at least 2.3 million workers, a situation they attribute to the war in Ukraine and a decline in migrant arrivals from Central Asian countries like Uzbekistan UZUZ. This strategic shift aims to provide necessary personnel for the manufacturing sector, service sector, and construction sector.
The surge in recruitment is evidenced by a dramatic rise in work-permit approvals. Statistics show that permits for Indian nationals grew from about 5,000 in 2021 to almost 72,000 last year. This expansion aligns with a December agreement reached between President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Furthermore, Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov has issued public statements confirming that the Russian government is prepared to accept large numbers of Indian workers to address the domestic vacancy crisis.
