Fuel price shock widens US airline product gap
Higher fuel prices are creating a divide between major carriers and low-cost operators as stronger airlines continue to invest in premium seating and technology. While United and Alaska report resilient demand, smaller rivals face mounting pressure on margins and balance sheets.
UNITED AIRLINES HOLDINGS INC is leveraging a clear earnings advantage to fund premium upgrades while rising fuel costs increase pressure on smaller competitors. At the International Air Transport Association meeting in Rio de Janeiro, United CEO Scott Kirby stated the carrier expects to recover the full impact of higher energy prices through fare increases by year-end. The divergence follows the collapse of Spirit Airlines last month, which sharpened scrutiny of carriers with weaker margins and balance sheets.
