Richmond Federal Reserve President Thomas Barkin indicated that a combination of stubborn inflation and robust employment figures in the United States could alter the central bank's current risk assessment. During an interview on Bloomberg Television, Barkin explained that the economic landscape has shifted since last year, when the Federal Reserve focused on labor market vulnerabilities. Barkin noted that recent data suggests the balance of risks is moving away from the labor market and back toward inflation. He pointed out that the trend observed over the last two months has challenged previous assumptions regarding the downward trajectory of price growth. > "The data thats come in over the last couple months suggests it has moved in the other direction," Barkin said on Bloomberg Television. Geopolitical tensions are also a factor in the Fed's outlook. Barkin mentioned that the conflict involving Iran could lead to higher consumer prices, adding another layer of risk to the inflation forecast. The central bank is now awaiting the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index report, which is expected to be released next week. Forecasts suggest the index will remain roughly one percentage point above the Federal Reserve's 2% target, reinforcing the need for continued vigilance. > "That certainly puts pause to any conclusion that were done fighting this," Barkin said of a coming report expected to show the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index still about a percentage point above the Feds 2% target.
