Starmer considers new powers to stop energy price gouging
Keir Starmer says the UK may give regulators more powers to tackle energy price gouging. The move follows concerns over the impact of the Middle East conflict.
The government of the United Kingdom is evaluating an expansion of regulatory powers to address concerns regarding price gouging and profiteering in the energy sector. Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Monday that his administration is considering whether to grant the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) additional enforcement capabilities to protect consumers from inflated costs driven by the conflict in the Middle East.
During a parliamentary committee hearing, Starmer expressed concern over the impact of global instability on domestic energy prices. He indicated that the government is actively looking at legislative or regulatory adjustments to ensure the watchdog has sufficient power to intervene when necessary.
