House Grants President Power to Suspend Fuel Taxes
The Philippine House granted President Marcos the power to suspend fuel taxes today. The measure responds to rising oil prices and awaits Senate approval.
The lower house of the Philippines has officially granted President Ferdinand Marcos Jr the authority to suspend the collection of fuel taxes. This legislative move is designed to mitigate the impact of surging energy costs on the domestic economy, particularly as Crude Oil (WTI) Futures experience heightened volatility. The decision follows a sharp rise in global oil prices, which has been exacerbated by the escalating conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iran. By providing the executive branch with the power to pause excise taxes on petroleum products, lawmakers hope to shield Filipino consumers from the brunt of international market disruptions. Despite the approval from the House of Representatives, the measure must still pass through the Senate. For the authority to be enacted into law, the Philippine Senate must provide its concurrence, after which it will be sent to the president for final signature.
