Peru suspends natural gas exports following pipeline leak
Minister Angelo Alfaro confirmed the export halt after a pipeline leak on Sunday. The outage has disrupted local LPG production and industrial power supplies.
The government of Peru has suspended all natural gas exports following a domestic energy crisis triggered by a pipeline failure. Energy and Mines Minister Angelo Alfaro announced the measure on Thursday, noting that the halt is necessary to prioritize internal demand after a rupture on Sunday forced the operator, Transportadora de Gas del Peru (TGP), to isolate a section of the main transport line.
The disruption has caused significant ripples across the energy sector. While companies like Natural Gas Services Group, Inc. provide specialized equipment and services to the global gas industry, the immediate focus in the region remains on local infrastructure recovery. TGP has already implemented restrictions on gas deliveries to industrial clients and power generation plants to manage the limited supply during the repair process.
The crisis has also impacted the production of secondary fuels. Pluspetrol was forced to suspend operations at its Pisco fractionation plant on Wednesday because the pipeline outage cut the essential flow of natural gas. This facility is vital to the local economy, as it accounts for roughly 70% of the total liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) consumed within the country.
