De Guindos says Spain should retain an ECB board seat
Outgoing VP Luis de Guindos says Spain should keep its ECB board seat. He believes the bloc's fourth largest economy will secure a spot as terms end next year.
Spain will seek to regain its seat on the six-member European Central Bank Executive Board as three vacancies open in 2027. Outgoing Vice President Luis de Guindos said the euro area's fourth-largest economy must maintain representation after his term ends in late May. A Spanish appointment would maintain the traditional dominance of the bloc's four largest economies over the EUR/USD policy-setting body.
Luis de Guindos told Spanish newspaper El País on Sunday morning that Spain could even target the ECB presidency. Boris Vujcic from Croatia will succeed de Guindos at the end of May, leaving Spain without a representative for the first time in years.
