OpenAI's advertising pilot in the United States has reached an annualized revenue rate of $100 million within just six weeks of its launch. This rapid financial milestone underscores the strong early interest in the AI startup's advertising efforts as it looks to support the high operational costs of its technology.

The program, led by Sam Altman, was introduced in January to display ads to specific users on the free tier and the Go subscription plan. OpenAI has maintained that these advertisements are kept separate from the AI's generated answers and do not impact the quality of the outputs. The company also clarified that user conversations are not shared with marketing partners.

Currently, about 85% of the user base is eligible to see advertisements, though fewer than 20% are shown ads on a daily basis. This gap suggests a significant opportunity for OpenAI to scale its monetization efforts within its existing audience.

We are seeing no impact on consumer trust metrics, low dismissal rates of ads, and ongoing improvements in the relevance of ads as we learn from feedback.

The company is preparing to expand the pilot program to international markets in the coming weeks, including Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. The advertiser pool has already grown to include more than 600 participants, with roughly 80% of small- and medium-sized businesses expressing interest in the platform.

To facilitate further growth, OpenAI plans to launch self-serve advertising tools in April. The company also recently hired David Dugan, a former advertising executive from Meta Platforms, Inc., to lead its global advertising solutions division.

While analysts note that advertising could provide a massive revenue stream from millions of users, they also warn that the move could potentially harm user trust in the product. This report was prepared with information from Mexico.
